Yasmin Vantuykom: Start before you're ready #48

If you wait until you're ready, it is almost certainly too late.

April 2025

This Week on "Workaholics"...

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a friend who has been thinking for a while about a new business idea. She's been hesitant talking about the project and told herself she was not ready to move forward. Hesitated which steps to take first, if they were the right ones or not...

So relatable. With my new project coming up, I've been very hesitant as well. I've learned the hard way the past years, that releasing a new project (business, book, podcast, whatever...) into this world will get you a lot of love and a lot of (negative) pushback. Starting your own idea / business venture will open up a lot of discussion with people you might know or not. Not everyone will like it, believe in it and I tell myself every time "that's fine, they are not my clients anyway". Although it always stings just a little bit, I need to get passed it to move forward.

What helps me personally is to already book the event location, without having invited one person. Talk to people about my business as if it already existed. Book the meeting with the expert without knowing what to say. Say yes to that keynote without knowing how it will go.

Things I've been doing to keep on moving forward, even when in doubt:

Start small and built momentum

Tip: Don’t feel like you have to launch the perfect, fully-formed version of your idea. Starting small allows you to test the waters and gradually build confidence.

Example: I've been talking about my project with friends and family for almost a year. Afterwards I took it to my newsletter, little by little on social media, new business partners etc.

Embrace feedback, but stay true to your idea

Tip: An important one for me. Everyone has an opinion, but not all feedback is valuable or worth taking. Accept that some criticism is part of the process, but don't let it psuh back your vision.

Example: If someone critiques the design of your website or the format of your content, take a moment to check if that feedback aligns with your vision. If it does, consider making adjustments. If not, remind yourself that your audience might be very different from the person offering feedback.

Accountability partner

Tip: Find someone to hold you accountable. Having a person who knows your goals and can encourage you can make all the difference in pushing past hesitation.

Example: Share progress updates with each other regularly, celebrate wins, and help each other navigate obstacles. You’ll both feel more motivated and ready to take action.

Workaholics: Newsletter #50 Knowledge is power, knowledge shared is power multiplied. June 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... Yesterday I experienced my first Rubicon Circle with other entrepreneurs. I believe in learning by sharing, by doing and by failing. After the whirlwind of Efluenz and the rapid growth over 6 years from 1 employee (myself) to 25+ in different countries, this has left me with a bittersweet feeling around leadership. I have experienced enormous beautiful moments with the...

Workaholics: Newsletter #49 The greatest power you possess, is the power to choose. April 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... It's been 1 year, since I decided to change my professional path. 2 years since the decision of quitting Efluenz. Knowing I wanted to quit, did not mean I knew what my next project would be. For the ones following me on socials or know me personally, know the change has been quite drastic. 1 year ago I got conscious of my own behaviour. Not being able to focus more than...

Workaholics: Newsletter #47 Patience is a key element of success. March 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... We're talking July 2024. After months of thinking "If I don't want Efluenz, what do I want?" The idea was there. A product and platform to help people with their smartphone and screen addiction. So I contact a product design agency, explained them the idea and they went to work. I also told them I wanted to launch before the end of 2024, to get ahead of Christmas gifts and New years...
