Yasmin Vantuykom: Life begins at 40 #46

Life begins at 40,
the rest is preparation.

March 2025

This Week on "Workaholics"...

"I wish I could shut myself down sometimes. I love my job, I love my kids, I love my friends, but dear lord, I need some "off" time."

Do you recognize this feeling? It's something I've felt for a long time without really doing anything about it. Telling myself it is normal, it is a busy period i my life, it will get better. Except it did not, it just got worse.

I realized after years some of those impulses were my own responsibility: people pleasing, not saying no to meetings I was no added value, saying yes to keynotes I did not feel like doing, saying yes to dinners I had no energy for, going to events just because it would seem good for my "image", checking my phone 24/7 even with other people...

The recording of season 1 of "Scroll-A-Holics" has been eye-opening, very confronting, but that is how you change, right?

"Modern society creates a virtual lion that constantly hunts us.”

Quote: "We will consciously introduce acute, short-term stressors to protect ourselves from the chronic stress of modern life."

  • Thomas highlights a practice of intentionally introducing small, manageable stressors (like fasting, cold exposure, or intense exercise) to train the body to handle stress better. In a world full of constant, low-grade stress (like digital distractions or endless work), this method encourages people to become more resilient by periodically experiencing controlled stress, which ultimately can help the body adapt and manage modern stress more effectively.

Quote: “We compare our inner world to the outer world of others."

  • This speaks to the idea of how social media often creates unrealistic comparisons. People tend to compare their personal struggles, which they may keep hidden, with the idealized versions of others' lives they see online. This comparison often leads to feelings of inadequacy and unhappiness. It's a powerful reminder that what we see on social media isn't the full reality of others' lives, and constantly comparing ourselves to that can be harmful.

Quote: "Life begins at 40, and the rest is preparation."

  • Explanation: Turning 40 marks a pivotal moment in life where the foundations laid earlier are ready to manifest into a deeper understanding of self and purpose. It implies that after decades of learning, growth, and experiences, one reaches a stage where true healing and self-discovery can begin. It's a beautiful way of recognizing that maturity brings clarity, allowing individuals to connect more deeply with their inner selves and find a more profound sense of purpose in life.

Workaholics: Newsletter #50 Knowledge is power, knowledge shared is power multiplied. June 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... Yesterday I experienced my first Rubicon Circle with other entrepreneurs. I believe in learning by sharing, by doing and by failing. After the whirlwind of Efluenz and the rapid growth over 6 years from 1 employee (myself) to 25+ in different countries, this has left me with a bittersweet feeling around leadership. I have experienced enormous beautiful moments with the...

Workaholics: Newsletter #49 The greatest power you possess, is the power to choose. April 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... It's been 1 year, since I decided to change my professional path. 2 years since the decision of quitting Efluenz. Knowing I wanted to quit, did not mean I knew what my next project would be. For the ones following me on socials or know me personally, know the change has been quite drastic. 1 year ago I got conscious of my own behaviour. Not being able to focus more than...

Workaholics: Newsletter #48 If you wait until you're ready, it is almost certainly too late. April 2025 This Week on "Workaholics"... A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a friend who has been thinking for a while about a new business idea. She's been hesitant talking about the project and told herself she was not ready to move forward. Hesitated which steps to take first, if they were the right ones or not... So relatable. With my new project coming up, I've been very hesitant as well....
